This weekend, Lori, Matt, and I headed down to San Diego to stay with Ian & Christina. We flew down there on Thursday afternoon and took Friday off work. Our flight was delayed out of SFO because… wait for it… the windshield de-icer was broken. Even at altitude, I don’t think there’s much ice between San Francisco and San Diego in August. But the delay was only an hour, so it wasn’t too much of a problem. We arrived safely and Tom picked us up.
I hadn’t been down to see Ian and C in a while, so it was good to hang out for a few days. The first thing we did was take a quick tour of their new house. After that, it was off for some carnitas at a local taqueria. After stuffing ourselves, we drove over to the beach. That’s where we saw the most amazing thing. Apparently San Diego was having a pretty big red tide last week. Although some areas have very dangerous, very poisonous red tides, the kind that San Diego gets are pretty harmless. They turn the water reddish-brown and murky, but don’t cause many other problems. However, their one side effect is that the tiny organisms that make the water brown are also bioluminescent - when you stir them up, they glow a bright blue! As we walked up to the cliff, you could see the glowing blue waves. We took several of Ian’s surfboards out into the water - every stroke I took engulfed my hands and board in glowing blue water. It was like nothing I have ever seen before.
The rest of our weekend was very relaxing - mostly amounting to laying on the beach, playing Scrabble, cooking, eating, and relaxing.
