What’s Left? More Than Just Ashes.

Burn Baby Burn!Burning Man was a blast last week. I find Burning Man is impossible to describe to try to relive - so this will probably be a drawn-out, wandering post about things I did and saw there.

Every year, preparing for a week in the desert is fun, but stressful. How much to bring? Have to have lots of water. What will you have time to cook? But if you just bring crap, you won’t want to eat it anyway. And shade, you’ve got to have shade. And when to leave? If you leave after work, you won’t arrive until the middle of the night. And if you forget anything, there’s no way to get it unless somebody gives it to you (which, thankfully, isn’t rare!).

I’m not sure what to say about my week at the burn. I said in my last post that people who have never been tend to just think it’s a “bunch of hippies in the desert”. I guess in some respects, that’s right. But on the other hand, it’s an amazing place - full of incredibly intelligent, incredibly artistic people out to have fun way way WAY outside their normal reality. Sometimes that includes drugs - but not always. Frankly, some of the art, structures, buildings, and planning would be simply impossible for a bunch of stoners and drug addicts. Part art exhibit, part Mad Max, part rave, part party, party love-fest. It’s just impossible to describe.

I put my pictures up over on Flickr - enjoy.

I’ve been sort of reclusive for much of the past year - spending a lot of time in San Diego or other places with Tom. And I haven’t been drinking either - which means not as much going out in SF. Burning Man was an excellent time to reconnect with my friends - Jim, Kevin, Lisa, Mikey, Claudia, all the PizzaSluts, Jonathan and all the other brits, Jonathan, Dake, and all the other Barbarellas. Good times. Re-entry into the world is rrrrooouuuggggh. If anything, Burning Man is a great reminder to take a different look at your life - do something a little bit differently until next year. I’ve got BIG changes coming, so this year’s burn was particularly reflective.

Until next year, Mr. Man. Until next year, PizzaSluts and Barbarella Bootcamp
