Why Does the Music Industry Want Variable Pricing?

Joel has an excellent post about why the music industry REALLY wants variable pricing – and it’s not because of supply and demand. It’s because they want more control over artists. Right on, Joel.

This is the missing piece of the puzzle for me. I knew someting was up because it seems like the rules of supply and demand fall apart here. It is a digital download which implies unlimitied supply. That should drive the prices way down. Don’t get me wrong, I know that there is overhead involved, but if you are looking for a market clearing price, there isn’t one.
