Mugshot Update - “Where’s My 0.5??!?!?!”

I’m working feverishly on the next update to Mugshot. I had planned to have some new features added and released weeks ago, but ended up rewriting a LOT of what I had. If you read my “Caching Thumbnails in Mugshot” posting, you know there are some parts of the early releases that I implemented with very little code - but the tradeoff was a VERY suboptimal solution. Well, I rewrote them. I’m happy to report that the new caching system seems to be working beautifully. It’s MUCH faster feeling than the old system. Additionally, photos downloading in the background aren’t noticeable in the interface. Unfortunately, it’s hard to release a new version without any new noticeable features - even if the invisible features have been totally rewritten. So I’m working on those now. So, to recap, here’s what I’ve already changed:

  • An entirely new caching system - mo’ speed, mo’ responsive, mo’ betta.
  • A new UI for navigation. You can check out an initial photo here. I like this “splitview” design better than the outline view design because it allows you to get items totally out of your way. But what do you think - I’d love some feedback.
  • A new detail view system. The changes here may not be that noticeable, but a lot more reliance o binding means about 75% less code in that area of the app.
  • Oh, I also consolidated the code I use to talk to Flickr - and cut out about 10 classes. Awesome. Simple.

And here’s what I *plan* to add in the next couple weeks - one or two of these may not make it, but I’m working on them:

  • Edit photo titles and descriptions right in Mugshot
  • Drag and drop organization. Want to add photos to a photoset? Just select them, drag, and drop.
  • A cool new secret feature. I don’t know whether it’ll be useful, but it’s been fun to work on. It’ll make for cool demos.
