CrashReporter DOA

There has been a lot of talk lately about Apple’s CrashReporter, mostly because of Unsanity’s Smart Crash Reports. (More info here, here, and here.) I have been reading it all with interest – and also adding Smart Crash Reports capability to Mugshot (without the auto-silent-install, of course).

But it wasn’t until yesterday that I realized something: Mugshot builds have been crashing for weeks… but I hadn’t seen CrashReporter (or SCR) show up. Come to think of it, I probably hadn’t seen CrashReporter in months! I decided to dig around my system. First stop was just searching for “crashreporter” using Spotlight. This showed me lots of files, the first of which was com.apple.CrashReporter.plist. I can’t remember exactly what the 4 keys were, but one of them was something like “display” with a value of “none”. Thinking that may be the problem, I trashed the plist file. Turns out, that was all I needed to do.

Not more than a couple hours later, Safari crashed, and up came Apple’s CrashReporter! Woo-hoo. So, if by chance you’re reading all about SCR and CrashReporter and thinking to yourself “Hmmm, I haven’t seen CrashReporter in a while…”, try trashing the plist file.
