As I mentioned in my last post, I was just on vacation for two weeks - in Panama. I took quite a few photos during the trip - I put the first half up on Flickr here. The rest are on Tom’s camera and he’s in Columbia for a week, so I’ll add his photos after he gets back.
On the nerdier side, I also took my Forerunner 205 with us and used it to track a hike up Volcan Baru outside the town of Boquete. You can download the Google Earth .kml file here and can take a look at the data on MotionBased.com here. The Google Earth photos aren’t that detailed, but you can still get a pretty good idea how big the mountain is and how steep the trail was! The Forerunner undercalculated the distance by a pretty large margin (It measured 6.63 miles, but according the signs and all the info we could find, the trail was over 13.5 kilometers which is over 8 miles). I’m not sure why that is, but it could have been our very slow hiking speed, tree cover, cloud cover, and huge elevation gain threw it off.
Update: Zipped up the kml file so it would download instead of displaying the text.
Can you give me some more info about the trip to Baru? I’m thinking about making it next week and need re-affirmation that it’s a voyage worth taking.
Sincerely,
Matt
