I have started getting quite a bit of comment spam here. I sat down tonight to add a captcha or other spam deterrent, and saw that there’s already quite a few WordPress plugins that handle this. I installed Did You Pass Math, which seems as simple and painless as any of the others and works on WordPress 2.0. Let me know if you have any problems.
Update: Daniel pointed out that WordPress 2.0 comes with the Akismet plugin. It requires a WordPress API key, but filters most spam without requiring any commenter input. Over the next week, I’ll probably switch between the two and see how they work.
just testing…
Interesting idea…
I really like this approach.. just enough effort to keep bots or cut&pasters away.
Another one (similar) I like is here: http://ridiculousfish.com
Yep, that’s one of the concepts I was thinking about copying
Buzz also has a simple “What’s Buzz’s Name” field. But since I found a plugin, I didn’t bother changing any of the code. Oh, and I should have included the link – WordPress maintains a list of plugins and spam blockers at http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Spam_Tools
Blake – I have had good luck with the Akismet service included with WP 2.x. I get SLAMMED with comment spam and yet only rarely have to screen any or even notice that they exist. For example just glancing at my “Akismet Spam” section in wp-admin, I see that in the past 10 days it has captured 150+ comments that I never had to deal with.
Hey Daniel – I hadn’t even noticed that plugin came with 2.0. Maybe I’ll give that a shot and get rid of the math plugin altogether!
